In the late 1800s, the Brooklyn Water Works tower in Freeport, NY was built to pump water from eastern Long Island to Brooklyn. After being closed for years, the three abandoned buildings began to deteriorate. More recently, it has become a subject of myths and a home for wildlife and graffiti. Color covered most of the brick while spray cans, garbage, weeds, and pieces of broken bricks covered the ground. In the main building, random boards of wood were still in tact with a chunk of hanging staircase. I loved visiting and absorbing the atmosphere and capturing both the intentional and unintentional beauty. After going to this location for a few years, I heard the bad news that it was demolished and nothing more than a pile of bricks and dirt. I went back to see for myself and to find some kind of souvenir to remember my past visits. Below I have photographs from the Brooklyn Water Works site as I will remember it. Below that series, I have photographs from after the buildings were demolished.
